Postpartum depression (PPD)

The birth of a new baby can trigger an array of powerful emotions; including: joy, trepidation, and fear. There is another emotions that can also be experienced— depression. Many new mothers can experience postpartum "baby blues" post childbirth, which can include mood swings, crying spells, anxiety and difficulty sleeping. These new baby blues typically begin within the first two to three days after delivery, and may last for up 6 months to a year. Other new mothers can experience a more severe, long-lasting form of depression known as postpartum depression. An extreme mood disorder called postpartum psychosis also may develop after childbirth.
